As some of you may know, on Tues and Weds we will be visited by Jessica Turner, a HEP theorist from Fermilab. In addition to her seminar at 4pm on Tuesday, we’ll have a special VIP journal club session on Wednesday at 11.00 am.
The list of fascinating ideas that Dr Turner has developed is long, and its hard to pick just one thing to talk about - but we have settled on this paper, on Scalar Democracy (read the paper to learn what that means!): https://arxiv.org/abs/1902.07214<https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Farxiv.org%2Fabs%2F1902.07214&data=02%7C01%7Cben.jones%40uta.edu%7C2d8e1a59b2204e2fdd5608d6fe497734%7C5cdc5b43d7be4caa8173729e3b0a62d9%7C0%7C0%7C636975988828612164&sdata=i3t40%2F2SGlVbtG7zlhu%2FNqfLaadSxQ8Ujy%2FCV3uRrwQ%3D&reserved=0>
I just wanted to send a quick reminder about our groups policy on high voltage testing, since there are some things we are trying to get done before the CM -
Any new system that has not had HV applied before should be inspected by either (a) a person at faculty level or (b) a representative from ES&H. They should ideally be present during first usage to supervise the procedure. Jonathan has kindly volunteered to inspect in then past when Dave and I have both been away, so I cc him here (though I do not now his
Dave and I need to report our groups progress to DOE in the next few days. We need to collect a little information from you in order to do it. I’d like everyone who has worked on NEXT-relatred activities in the last year to please reply to this email in the next 24 hours.
The only conference talk I’m aware of is Texas APS over the fall 2018 semester. To answer your query:
Talk title: Ion Beam Systems for Barium Tagging in Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Location: University of Houston Date: October 20, 2018, which is a Saturday
No award was won by me (would be so cool if I got one, still bitter about that guy with the bad pdf)
Just thought I’d let you all know that after trying to invite myself to give a NEXT seminar at my old Uni it’s descended (ascended) into me giving a colloquium on double beta decay (experimental, title to be invented today) at the end of the month, 22 May.
Since it’ll be my first UTA talk I wanted to check if there are any official stuff I’m meant to put on title slides etc and also get my hands on nice symbols (and Leslie's fancy universe picture, if I’m honest).

Just a quick reminder of the workshop next week and the software tutorial that we’ll do on the first days.
It’ll all be quite loosely organised and we’ll go through each step of installation as required but, for those of you who haven’t used the NEXT python framework (IC), it’d be good if you checked that you have a modernish git version installed with lfs (large file storage) enabled. This will allow us to skip any odd errors related to tests etc.
I am in - just picking up coffee at Starbucks and back there in 10.

I just learned that group alum Zane Miller has passed his FE Exam (sort of like a GRE for engineering companies), and has secured a highly competitive job on the engineering track at Lockheed Martin. Congratulations Zane, on this great news! Best of luck in your new position, and thanks for all your important contributions to our group and to NEXT-100!
Everyone who’s going to do shift should have a look at the attached documents, especially the slow control guide (it’s a link to teamwork because it’s a bit big, let me know if you can’t get access).
There are a few things that are out of date but I can clarify things and I’ll make a check sheet that represents a bit better the things you’ll have to do while on shift.
Following our People’s Choice Award for Best Looking Research Group on Campus, we have visits from two film crews in the near future:
1) President Kharbari's media people are making a promotional documentary about UTA and want to film us on Monday afternoon, Feb 4. They looked around today and liked the idea of shots of someone “taking data” in the barium room, people "working on" the mothership / TeaPot, and someone shining colorful laser beams and taking images in the fluorescence room. I recommend everyone who works on those things be around to be filmed Monday at

I hope that everyone has been having a happy holidays! Now that 2019 is almost upon us, I wanted to send a quick email about the back-to-it plans.
The University re-opens for business on January 2nd. On that day I’ll meet a few folks where we have some hanging threads to tie up - those people will get another email after this one.
Please find attached a fluorescent, starry sky Christmas card. The stars here are glowing crystals of barium captured in 2018’s hottest new molecules, care of our chemistry friends. May they continue to light our way :-)
If you observe Christmas, then "Merry Christmas”, and if you don’t, then "Happy Whatever-You-Do”. See you again in 2019 for another year of exciting science and important advances. In the mean-time, please be sure to take time this winter break to relax, to notice the world again, and to spend meaningful time with friends and loved ones.
I think we will skip group meeting today because everyone who is not doing finals is madly rushing to take or process data… We’ll resume group meetings in the new year.
People who are not going to Spain this weekend should please to check in with me briefly today about their plans for the next couple of weeks. I can be reached on SLACK to fix a time.

There are two reasons for the temporary change:

Today I found a Pringles can in the trash can in SH014, and a bottle of drinking water in SH018. Please be aware that it is STRICTLY against lab rules to eat or drink in either SH014, SH014A or SH018. These rooms contain both radioactive sources and many toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. Everyone who has lab access took online safety courses at UTA where this was explained, so there is no excuse for violating these rules.

Our next postdoc candidate, Katherine Woodruff, is here on Friday. The schedule for the visit is tight, its only one day, but we can fit everyone in, I hope! Here is a proposed outline:
Thurs evening: Possibly Dinner (tbc), I will ping people.
9-10.30am: Meet with Ben, first look around + ultra-brief lab tour 10.30-11am: mothership tour w/ mothershippers 11-12: Group update meeting 12-1: Talk on MicroBooNE and proton spin structure 1-2: Lunch 2-3: Barium tagging tour and discussion w/ barium taggers 3-3.30: IceCube discussion w/ IceCubers 3.30-4.30: Look around campus - machine shops, fab lab, analytical labs,

Group meeting tomorrow is, I understand, at 11am. Please bring 2 slides. Right after that meeting, at noon, we have a short talk from Pranava about the Prospect reactor neutrino experiment. Should be really interesting - see you then!

I’ll be landing at precisely 11am today, so I think I’ll have to skip over the update meeting (of which I have a grand total of zero anyways). I’ll meet with you Monday to discuss what I should do next. Apologies!
Just letting you know I am bringing two postdoc candidates to campus in the next two weeks:
1) Pranava Surukuchi, July 12-13 (This Thurs-Fri) 2) Katherine Woodruff, July 20 (next Fri)
We’ll have them both give a short and informal talk on their past work, right after the group meeting, at 1pm on Friday. Other than this the visit schedule will be generally informal, but it would be good if they could meet as many of you as possible.
We’ll have a short meeting today at noon, followed by practice talks for the barium tagging people. (If you haven’t heard about this last one then you don’t need to worry about it).
We will have our group meeting tomorrow at 10:30 AM in the 102 conference room. You can connect remotely with zoom: Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://fnal.zoom.us/j/2505771138
Ground rules for new people: We usually show 1-2 slide updates every week with current work and progress. We are a large group, so discussion goes fast so that everyone can give their update. If you are new you can put together a single slide or give a 2 minute verbal update on what you will be working on during the summer.
I encourage all to look at this. Usually if you apply you have a good shot at getting one!
