Dear Sociology Students and other Friends of Sociology:

I spoke with a reporter (Robert Tharp) from the Star Telegram today who had
a question or two that I felt could best be answered by some of the UTA
students -- using their sociological insights for a worthy purpose. I hope
some of you will take time to send him your ideas.

Just below follows a message from the reporter. Please reply directly to
him at [log in to unmask] rather than to this listserv.

Thanks for your help.

Dr. Ray Eve
Professor of Sociology

Forwarded message follows:

I'm a reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and I'm working on an
article arelating to privacy and the electronic age. This years's UTA
student
directory just came out, and about 6,000 of the 20,424 student population
chose to keep their names and phone numbers confidential when they
registered.<
   <
The number of unlisted numbers is about three-times last year's rate, and
I'm wondering whether it could be related to heightened concerns about
privacy
in this electronic age. I'm also wondering whether university-age people are
more sensitive to these issues. I'd like to know what you think and whether
any of you chose to keep your information confidential when you registered.<

   <
Also, I hope you appreciate this piece of irony: if you wish to
contribute
to this article, I'll need your full name because my editors will not allow
me
to use confidential sources for this article.<

Thanks,
Robert Tharp
