Call for Papers

The 34th annual SEUSS will be held at Emory University. The Symposium provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to present their research at a professional meeting. Presentations in any area of sociology are welcome. Students whose papers are accepted will give a 12-15 minute presentation of their research.

All presenters will receive Certificates of Professional Participation. Paper abstracts are published in the Symposium Proceedings. The three best papers will receive an Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research (1st place $100, 2nd place $75, 3rd place $50).*

A banquet will be held on February 19th for all participants. The keynote speaker at the banquet is Dr. Barret Michalec (B.A. Emory University 2000; M.A. East Carolina University 2004; Ph.D. Emory University 2009) from the Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. His address, "Empathy & Inter-connectedness in Health Professions Education" will weave autobiographical elements with findings from his various projects in the health pre-professional fields.

Submission Procedure

Part I. Submission Deadline: Friday, January 22, 2016

Interested students should email Dr. Karen Hegtvedt ([log in to unmask]) the following items with the term "SEUSS" in the subject line:

1. A 150-word abstract or completed paper with a 150 word abstract* (Longer abstracts or papers without abstracts will be returned to submitter)

2. A faculty letter of support indicating that the student's research is, or will be, completed and ready for presentation on February 20, 2016.

* Only completed papers submitted by January 22, 2016 will be considered for the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research competition.

Part II. Paper Acceptance and Registration

Students will receive notification of paper acceptance and registration information the week of February 1-5, 2016. A $25 registration fee defrays the costs of the banquet and proceedings. This fee is required for all students participating in the symposium and all faculty attending the banquet.
