Subject: fall 2007 Center for Theory colloquia series on the 'sixties--a preview

Next fall, we are going to depart from our usual format and instead present a series of interrelated colloquia on the political legacy of the sixties. We will examine parallels, and connection, between then and now. Instead of having people deliver formal or even informal papers, our facilitators will lead discussion on focused topics such as the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, the uncoiling of the decade into Weatherman and the Panthers, the emergent women's movement, SDS and the Port Huron Statement, SNCC, the thread connecting COINTELPRO and Homeland Security, the relationship between politics and culture, and other topics of interest. If people are interested, we may extend this series into next year's spring semester.

We are hoping to bring Jeremy Varon, a distinguished young historian of the sixties who has authored an outstanding book with California entitled 'Bringing the War Home.' As well, Jerry Rodnitzky and Steve Maizlish from our own Hiistory Department will be leading discussions. Other historians may be participating. And I welcome anyone else from other departments and programs, including students, who would like to lead discussion. Please let me know if you want to be involved. I hope to be able to announce the full fall schedule early in the summer.
