ABOUT BALLET NEPANTLA

Inspired by the genre-defying, boundary blurring work of borderlands writer Gloria Anzaldua, Ballet Nepantla is a fusion of traditional, classical, and contemporary dance forms. Growing up on the border in South Texas, its founder and artistic director, Andrea Guajardo, draws upon her own experience and training in classical and modern dance to create a company in New York that reflects the complex and interwoven histories of Latinx people in the United States.

ABOUT "VALENTINA"

Ballet Nepantla's newest show, Valentina, is inspired by the history of the Mexican Revolution and focuses particularly on the unbounded bravery of women revolutionaries, known as Adelitas during the Mexican Revolution. This show nicely captures the intent of Hispanic Heritage month in its elevation of Latinx performers exploring cultural and historical themes that have been central to the development of both Mexico and the United States.

"Ballet Nepantla erases boundaries between dance forms and explores what it means to be from the borderlands - both as a geographical place and a state of mind"

--Daniel Tyx, The Texas Observer, December 8, 2017
