Summer Course Open to Sociology Students! Here is the description;
While we often discuss what technology and science do for people, we often forget to talk about the social relations that produce science and technology. Furthermore, we spend more time making scientific fact controversial than we spend discussing what seems to be the uncontroversial application of science and technology in everyday life. This course will explore the social relations that underpin the creation and deployment of science and technology. The construction of scientific knowledge can be analyzed as a social process and the products themselves as social entities.

Ken tells me that they have a serious need for people willing to lead classes for their resident population. (Some of the neighborhood aged persons also attend). These are not for credit courses, so most any smart college student could probably teach some of these courses.

Hello, wonderful students! Women's Studies sponsors the Expanding Your Horizons program every fall and it's coming up on November 8 this year. The program is to encourage girls in grades 6-8 to pursue careers in math and science. Professional women hold workshops for groups of girls and UTA students volunteer to help us. I personally need about 6 volunteers to help me teach the girls how to make a facial reconstruction with clay on skull models. Previous experience in forensic art is not required because I'll show you what to do when the time comes.
Personally, it looks to me as it the most important thing to be aware of is:
Flooding kills more people every year than any other disaster. DO NOT drive through water more than about 18" deep.
Fortunately the storm is expected to be moving fairly fast when passing DFW, so maybe we'll get lucky and miss the kind of flooding seen in recent hurricanes. But the Weather Channel was saying last night that as much as 7 inches plus would be possible in Oklahoma. This suggests we could see some localized serious flooding here.

Joan Baez had a strong global influence on the human rights movements and the people of the 1960's. As young teenaged boomers, we kids walked barefooted or rode our skateboards to the community swimming pools with our guitars over our shoulders, just like Joan Baez, and we'd sing folk and protest songs. Our voices weren't professional, but we had a lot of spirit and we annoyed most of the adults sufficiently to make it an effort worth our while.

Will we be taping this (audio, video, etc.) at all? I have an evening commitment in Fort Worth next Thursday but I am keenly interested in her subject matter. Even if we could get an audio recording, I would be appreciative. Perhaps there is somewhere this particular lecture can be purchased, (e.g. if she has done this somewhere before and it has been taped, etc.)? Maybe there are others who might be interested in that option as well?
