[Office of the President, UTA]<http://www.uta.edu/president/>

Dear colleagues,

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of our faculty and staff, The University of Texas at Arlington has not only been ranked as the 5th most diverse undergraduate population among national universities by U.S. News & World Report for three years in a row, but we are also recognized in the region as an example of inclusion and opportunity for people of all origins and backgrounds.

Our Principles of Community<http://www.uta.edu/strategicplan/plan/poc.php> set forth a year ago provide a set of core values—cherished principles that serve as the heart and soul of our engagement with each other and the larger community we serve. These principles bring us together and ground us in our mission of research, teaching, and public service. In many ways, these are not listed or advertised, but they characterize the environment in which we work, communicate, and interact with each other.

While much has been done to enhance diversity in leadership here at UTA, it is clear that we have not progressed as far as we could in ensuring that our undergraduate diversity is reflected in our leadership, thereby enabling our students to see themselves in their role models.

The attached policy, which expands on guidance provided by the University of Texas System, is intended to serve as a reminder to us of our need to be ever-diligent in our desire to have leadership that is as diverse as our student population. This is a complex endeavor which requires deliberate attention to ensure excellence while actively enhancing diverse pools of candidates from which to interview. Building tomorrow’s diverse leadership begins with ensuring availability of qualified and diverse pools of candidates today.

I have every confidence that the campus will rise to the task and continue to set standards for others to follow. Thank you for all you do for our students, the communities we serve and the institution as we continue to strive to be the pre-eminent place for intellectual pursuits and a driver of positive change.

This policy is effective immediately and a copy is attached here, it can also be found in the Handbook of Operating Procedures<https://www.uta.edu/policy/hop/>. As you review this policy, please feel free to contact Jean Hood, Vice President of Human Resources, with any questions. She can be reached at 817-272-7091.

Sincerely,

[Vistasp M. KarbhariPresident]
